1959 Curling State Championship Team

Curling
Induction Year: 2023

1959 was the first year the Wisconsin Interscholastic Association (WIAA) established a tournament for high school boys curling teams. Curling Coach, Harry Johnson set up a round robin intramural tournament to determine who would represent Wausau High in the WIAA playoff series. The outcome came down to Coach Johnson splitting the first and second teams to create one team including; Gerald Olshanski, John Forester, Leif Salvensen, Bill Olson and John Coleman.

The sectionals were held in Medford WI, where the team beat Medford and Superior to punch their ticket to state in Madison. In Madison it was a three team battle to earn the crown. Wausau beat Poynette, their first opponent 6-4, then gained momentum by handling Portage 6-2, and finally clinched the trophy beating Madison East 11-5. As we look back to the very first WIAA Curling State Championship, Wausau High will forever be etched as the FIRST to earn the crown!
